Charleston is a port city located in the US state of South Carolina. It can be found on a peninsula where it is joined by the Ashley and Cooper Rivers in the bay of the same name. Charleston is the largest and at the same time the county town of Charleston County, where around 120,000 people live. Its history dates back to the middle of the 16th century, but it was officially declared a city in 1670. At that time, however, it was called Charlestown or Charles Town after the English king Charles II. It took its current name only in 1783.
As early as 1690, Charleston was the fifth largest city in all of North America and remained among the ten largest cities in the USA until 1840. To this day, it is a kind of symbol of the South, and thanks to its impressive atmosphere and historical value, it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in South Carolina. Already in the middle of the last century, it was called the most beautiful city in America. The city is characterized by numerous churches that adorn its panorama.
According to existingcountries, Charleston is an architecturally charming and very well-preserved city. This southern “beauty” is decorated with noble houses, elegantly in harmony with the surroundings, but you will also meet here with the hospitality and friendliness of the local residents. The streets are strewn with cobblestones and lined with pre-war revolutionary buildings. Even today, you can see horse-drawn carriages on them, but today they are just an attraction for tourists. Traces of the Civil War are still quite alive in Charleston. It is here on a nearby island that Fort Sumter is located, which is where the Civil War began. The first shots of this war, fired by members of the Confederacy, were heard from the fort.
Fort Island is located at the entrance to Charleston Harbor. The surroundings of the port are made up of a number of islands and peninsulas, formed by a tangle of watercourse beds, dead ends and other wetlands forming often impenetrable mudflats. The narrow entrance to the bay is defined by two large islands, Sullivan`s Island and Morris Island. In the past, Charleston was one of the first colonial cities where Jews could practice their faith without restrictions. In 1749, the fourth oldest Jewish congregation in the continental United States was even founded here, called Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim. In the middle of the 19th century, the oldest Orthodox synagogue, Broth Sholom Beth Israel, which was founded by Ashkenazi Jews, also grew up in the city.
Today, Charleston is a destination sought after by America’s cream of the crop and golf enthusiasts. There is a charming and luxurious golf resort in the historic part of the city. Accommodation in modern and luxuriously equipped villas with a panoramic view of the ocean is available for those interested.
