Interstate 225 or I -225 is an Interstate Highway in the American city of Denver, Colorado. The highway forms an eastern bypass of Denver, primarily opening up Aurora, Denver’s largest suburb. The route is 19 kilometers long.
Travel directions
The southern terminus of I-225.
In a modern business park, I-225 exits from Interstate 25, which runs from Albuquerque to Denver. There are 2×3 lanes. A light rail link runs in the median, connecting Aurora with the business park on the south side of Denver and in the suburb of Centennial. Further on, the road widens to 2×4 lanes. At the shoulder of the highway is the Cherry Creek Dam, a 40-meter high dam that connects Denverprovides water. To the south of Aurora, State Route 83 exits, and the highway narrows from 2×4 to 2×3 lanes. Aurora is Denver’s largest suburb, more than half the size of Denver itself with a population of 339,000. The city still has to grow to 550,000 inhabitants, the same size as Denver itself. Aurora itself also has some business parks along the highway. In the north of Aurora, the highway ends at Interstate 70, which runs from Denver to Kansas City.
History
Construction of the highway began in 1964, and has been constructed from north (I-70) to south (I-25). In 1976, the final section in southern Denver opened to traffic. The I-225 is not particularly important through traffic, there is relatively little traffic from Colorado Springs to Kansas City and vice versa that takes this route.
Widenings
Between 1994 and 2005, the highway was gradually widened to 2×3 lanes, except for a portion in Aurora. The section through Aurora was widened to 2×3 lanes between 2012 and 2014.
