Hawaii (English: Hawaii) is the 50th state of the United States of America and also consists of only islands. The islands are located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and the capital is Honolulu. In total Hawaii had 1,288,200 inhabitants in the year 2009. Geographically, Hawaii is located southwest of the US, southeast of Japan, and northeast of Australia. Hawaii is one of the smallest states in the entire US. The largest city here is also Honolulu which is located on the island of Oahu. Originally there used to be a lot of volcanoes here. That is why a large part of the islands is also fertile. Hawaii is known as a popular vacation destination with beautiful beaches and expensive hotels. The US military has a large base here. The official languages here are English (from all over the US) and Hawaiian (the local language of Hawaii). A fun fact about Hawaii is that an American president, namely Barack Obama, spent much of his life here. He was born here, but ethnically he is not really Hawaiian.

Geography & Climate
All of Hawaii is made up of 137 different islands. All together you call something like this an archipelago. The Hawaiian archipelago of 137 islands has only 8 major islands: Hawaii Island, Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. Hawaii Island is the largest island, but the most populous island is Oahu. Oahu is the most populous, because that’s where the capital/largest city of Hawaii (Honolulu) is located. Alaska and Hawaii are the westernmost states of the US. The highest point or the highest mountain in Hawaii is Mauna Kea with 4205 meters. Actually, this mountain is higher than Mount Everest, but much of Mauna Kea is below sea level. Natural disasters are common in Hawaii. Examples are eruptions of volcanoes, hurricanes or tsunamis. Because Hawaii is very far from the rest of the world, there are several species of animals that are nowhere to be found. Fish, mammals and birds are the main species of animals around and on the islands. Some animals are even endangered species. The climate here is nice and warm and tropical. That is why there are many palm trees here and the sun is shining. There are many beaches here and often they are full of tourists sunbathing. Although Hawaii is not that big, it does have two national parks. They are called Haleakala National Park (located on the island of Maui) and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (located on Hawaii Island). Hawaii is continentally located in Oceania, just like the countries of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Sunset in Hawaii is very beautiful, which is why tourists love to take pictures of it. The sunset is especially beautiful on Hawaii Island. The average temperature of Hawaii is about 24 degrees.
Population
Hawaii had a population of 1,288,200 in the year 2009. The population of Hawaii is growing very fast. In a few years it will reach 1.3 million. Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island are the most populous islands in Hawaii. The average expected life here is 80 years. Many people have a healthy life here. There are actually more than 1.3 million people living in Hawaii right now, mostly tourists or people from the US military. The largest city in all of Hawaii is Honolulu which is also the capital with 377,357 inhabitants in the year 2006. Hilo is second on the list with only 40,760 inhabitants in the year 2001. Many different ethnic groups live in Hawaii. White Americans, Native Hawaiians and Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos…) are the main ethnic groups living here. Hawaiian and English are the main languages here. Much of the population of Hawaii believes in Christianity or Buddhism. There are also many people who have no religion.
